Chinese New Year

a) My family and I celebrated Chinese New Year together on 7th February at our relative’s house. There weren’t many events on that day we did. However, there is still some for me to describe.

First part of the Chinese New Year tradition we spring cleaned the house. That is not an easy task as we had to clean the entire house and our house is considered too big to finish cleaning in a day. So it took 1 and a half day to finish. Of course, most people would like to repaint their house as it brings the New Year’s atmosphere along.

Second part of the Chinese New Year Tradition is the reunion dinner. It is a time when family members gather together and wish each other a healthy new year.

‘lohei’ is part of the reunion is when there is a dish of vegetables at the base, followed by crackers spread all over the vegetables, raw fish (normally salmon) on the crackers and lined with sweetened sauce as a topping. Once the ingredients are placed, someone would shout “3, 2, 1, go!” and then we would lift the ingredients high up and let them drop back onto the plate as we sing well wishes to each other.

Third part of the Chinese New Year tradition was the exchange of the red packets. That is a traditional event that all Chinese do during Chinese New Year. The amount of money inside MUST NEVER be an odd number dollar or $4 as it will bring bad luck.

Last part of the Chinese New Year tradition is to visit the elderly. This is to show we respect the elderly and normally this give them comfort.

This is what I did for Chinese New Year. (Sorry there aren’t any photos)
